Carn Du House in Mousehole
Carn Du History
Carn Du was built in 1912 for a French sea captain who wanted to feel as close to the sea as he could, Carn Du is an Edwardian villa which comfortably sleeps 12 with free WiFi throughout, within walking distance to Mousehole.
Carn Du has a colourful history. In its time Mousehole has played host to, among others, Charlie Chaplin, Dylan Thomas, Charles Laughton, the artists Gwen and Augustus John who lived in the village, and the Guggenheims. With its light and space, Carn Du is a house of rare charm on the Penwith peninsular, one of the most beautiful parts of old Cornwall.
Layout of the house
The principal rooms all have panoramic views of the Atlantic from Penzance, Mount’s Bay and the Lizard to the rocky coastline stretching west towards Lamorna and Land’s End.
There is a large family kitchen with an Aga and Rangemaster oven, an open-plan dining room, a sitting room with a log fire and a sunroom all opening into one another creating a wonderful sense of light and space.
On the first floor a light airy landing, typical of a house of this period, leads to five large bedrooms, three with en-suite bathrooms, and an additional family bathroom. The two main bedrooms both have bay windows, open onto a balcony with far-reaching views over the sea, one with a Victorian enamelled bath beneath the bay window.
The Annex
The house has a self-contained attached annex with a separate entrance. It has a sea view to the side and includes a kitchen, shower, WC, and double-bed/sitting room with TV and DVD player.
The Garden
In the garden, there is an outdoor, heated infinity pool (7m x 4m) open from April until mid-September. Guests are requested to bring pool and beach towels.
The Cottage
The Carn Du Cottage sleeps 4 and can be rented with the main house or separately. It has a large open-plan sitting room/dining room/kitchen, with a wood-burning stove. Upstairs comprises a bathroom and two double bedrooms (one with a balcony). All rooms look over the sea. If the house and cottage are rented together the pool is available for both – but if rented separately, since the pool is outside the house kitchen window the pool would be for the sole use of the house.
